Prostate Cancer Signs and Symptoms

Prostate cancer symptoms are not the same for everyone. While some men may experience noticeable symptoms, others may feel no different and it won’t be until a routine check up with their doctor that prostate cancer is detected.

It is important for a man to discuss whether he needs prostate screening tests with his doctor. The age your doctor will suggest you get tested will depend on your genetic family history. The two kinds of screening tests a doctor will perform include the PSA (Prostate Specific Antigen) blood test and a DRE (Digital Rectal Exam). These tests are quick and can be performed in a doctor’s office. Prostate cancer detected by screening tests tends to be in the early stages and is therefore able to be treated more effectively.

Although some men don’t experience any symptoms, others may experience difficulty in urinary and sexual function. The following symptoms may indicate the presence of prostate cancer:

  • Urinating frequently, particularly at night
  • Having trouble starting urination or holding urine in
  • Weak or interrupted flow of urine
  • Experiencing pain or burning when urinating
  • Passing blood in urine or semen
  • Experiencing frequent pain in the upper thighs, hips or lower back

These symptoms can also indicate other prostate diseases or disorders such as prostatitis or Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BHP). They can also be benign or side effects of lifestyle. If you experience these symptoms your doctor will check you thoroughly to determine the cause. If you are suffering from these symptoms please consult your doctor.
