Historically, this has been done by placing needles through the rectum. This practice was ceased at the Prostate clinic in 2010 due to the risk of infection. Since that time all biopsies have been performed through the perineum which has resulted in a 0% infection rate. More recently these tissue samples have been obtained with the aid of the Artemis system, which allows more accurate targeting of small lesions within the prostate.
